Great experience, deserves more than 3.9 rating

I'm surprised tk see the 3.9 rating during the time of me writing this review. I wanted an affordable get away for me and my husband and we settled on Riu Negril.
Cleanliness:
The room and shower were clean, no complaints there. However the couches were slightly stained, I believe that may have been ue to age and there's nothing that can be done about that. We just put a blanket before sitting.
Throughout the resort was also clean.

Food:
As a Jamaican myself, I can confirm there was a wide variety of options (jamaican and non-jamaican options).
We went in Feb so we missed mango season, but we were told that there are mango trees on site that guests are allowed to pick!! So we will have to visit again during may/june.
The drinks were very good !!! Bartenders do a good job at mixing

Service:
Everyone was very nice and pleasant, if we asked for something we got it and promptly. There was one girl at the reception, Brittany very rude! Aside from her everyone was a pleasure

Activites:
The daily pool activities were engaging, along with the nightly shows.
My husband enjoyed the gym facilities. They have a fair amount of free water activities included that we took advantage of.

What I liked the most:
(During all my off resort experiences, I felt very safe)

1. If you walk along the beach, it will take you off the resort. It allows you to venture off the resort at your own will. There are many vendors where you can buy things, have conversations and learn about their business, but be prepared for a lot of people asking you to check out their shop.

2. One day my husband and I got a driver to take us to 7 mile beach and it truly is a beautiful beach. We stayed there all day just enjoying the water.

3. The all white party was a vibe.

If you have transportation available to you or you use the hotel transportation visit Jerk Center very good and saucy jerk pork available ! The owners name is Sheba, she was very welcoming. We also tried Ragga bone, but i preferred Jerk Center. It could be because we got the last plate of the morning, but it was a bit dry for my liking. I was told the key to Ragga bone, is to arrive before 10am, because everything will be gone by 11am, I believe they open at 9am.
*** We met someone on the resort who set up a driver for us at a much more affordable rate than what the resort offered. Do this at your own risk!
Alternatively, use the transportation offered by the resort.

This was my first Riu resort and all in all Riu Negril, offered a lot more than I expected based on the reviews. This could also be because we visited shortly after they reopened after the renovations. But I would definitely return!!

Average at best!

I just got back from a 7 nights stay at this Riu location. All in all I had a good experience. The hotel is well maintained and kept very clean. The food is good and the buffet has a wide selection of cuisines including local favorites, pizza, vegetarian options ect. The property was recently renovated which makes it feel brand new.
The beach at the property is not the quality of the usual beach stretch in Negril, so don’t expect the same beautiful beach as the 7 mile stretch. There’s a considerable amount of seaweed near the shore, the sand stops at the shoreline and what follows after is a muddy slimy texture to the sand that feels disgusting to walk on. I wouldn’t be surprised if this beach was previously a mangrove before the hotel was built. This hotel is called Riu Negril but is actually located in Hanover which is a neighboring parish.
The staff in my opinion are rough around the edges; not in a charming way, as I assume some of them think they are. Arrived at the lobby on day one with only two agents at the front desk at 3 pm with a queue forming. Was checked in by a staff member returning from break which took all of 5 minutes: only asked to verify my email and repeated several times before placing the wristband that if I lose it I will have to pay $250. Before leaving the check in desk I had to ask if there were any bellhops on staff to help with my luggage since right before checking in I had roll my luggages up the ramp into the lobby. I was given the stickers and pointed in their direction.
Two waitresses had an argument at breakfast for about 5 to 10 minutes before what I assumed was a supervisor stepped in. I mean full-on going up into each other’s faces ready to fight and being separated by a lady from house keeping. I saw a male waiter literally throwing the coffee cups and saucers on the table in front of me. Not sure if he was rushing or angry but the crashing sound startled me a little. The general greeting when you sit at the table at the buffet seems to be “ you ahlright?”, which translates to please just say yes so I can move on without getting you anything to drink since you can get it yourself. Cappuccino machine rarely works, out of 7 nights I got maybe 3 cappuccino’s between breakfast and dinner.
I would only stay again if I have another trip where it’s a mixture of business and leisure as this trip was and if the price is reasonable.

Fantastic, staff make the hotel , Beauitful people, Beauitful country can’t wait to get back

Review of Riu Negril – September 2025

We’ve just returned from an absolutely fantastic holiday at Riu Negril. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we can’t wait to return. I’ll share both the positives and the few areas that could be improved.

Areas for Improvement
• Children’s Pool Area: There’s a brilliant play area for little ones, but it isn’t supervised. While the signage clearly states it’s parents’ responsibility, we did notice some parents leaving their children unattended. Also, some guests left plates of food lying around, which attracted wasps. It would be great if staff occasionally monitored the area to help keep it tidier.
• Room Cleaning Timing: Our room was always cleaned to a very high standard, but with a young child needing an afternoon nap, sometimes we returned to find it hadn’t yet been serviced. Not a complaint – just something we noticed because of our routine.

Highlights & Positives
• Entertainment Team: Absolutely fantastic! Always smiling, full of energy, and they worked tirelessly to keep guests entertained – even moving activities indoors during the rain. Special shout-outs to Shadow, Shaquille, and Princess for being amazing.
• Lifeguards: Always present at all the pools (apart from the baby pool), constantly tidying and making sure everyone was safe. The beach was also well covered – a great reassurance.
• Photography: Tyrone was wonderful, especially with our godson. He always stopped to chat and interact with him – such a lovely touch that made our stay extra special.
• Restaurant Staff: A huge thank you to Daniil, who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. All the staff were kind and friendly, but Daniil stood out for his warmth and interaction with children.
• Gardening & Cleaning Teams: Often the unsung heroes, but the gardeners and cleaners worked tirelessly to keep the grounds and dining areas spotless. They deserve recognition for their efforts.
• Reception Team: Always polite, friendly, and wonderful with children.

Management

One area I feel could be improved is visibility from management. The General Manager and his assistants were occasionally seen walking through, but they didn’t seem to interact with guests. A simple hello or chat would go a long way to show appreciation to the customers who make the hotel what it is.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Riu Negril exceeded our expectations. The staff are the heart of this resort – so many go above and beyond every day, often unnoticed. We left with wonderful memories, especially thanks to how our godson was treated like part of the family.

We would 100% recommend this hotel and will definitely be back! 🌴☀️

Lovely Hotel. Only had a few issues

We have just got back from RIU Negrill. We stayed for 14 nightd . Two adults and two teens. I was worried about the hotel after reading the reviews.

Staff are amazing. Welcome drinks on arrival. We No issues when checking in.

Room
We stayed in room 1155 wasn't too far from the pools and main building. We could see the sea and beach from our balcony.
Our room was cleaned every day, fresh towels. Mini bar was topped up . Air con and ceiling fan were amazing. It gets very hot on the night. Pleanly of room we had two double beds and a sofa bed.
You do need to download the Rui App we had no problems using it . Found it very helpful. A great idea every hotel should have this.

We had a few issues.
● The lack of daytime entertainment for our sons. most activities were for over 16s or under 10s nothing for younger teenagers.
● Evening entertainment repeats itself every week. If you stay for two weeks you can watch the same show twice.
● last day we woke up to water coming from the bathroom light . Upstairs decided to have a pool party in there room. We were all packed up , so it didn't really bother us.
● Tui trips are expensive. Most trips are £100 PP. The Tui rep was awful. If you do book go onto Tui app and avoid Kerry and a man who doesn't work for Tui but turns up with Kerry.
( this was strange he didn't wear a uniform eather)

Food
Food is fabulous All fresh. We never struggled on finding something to eat . The choice is amazing. Alcohol is all local and plenty of cocktails.

Pools .
when we arrive the main pool was clear. All the pools are warm which is nice . Not a big shock when you get in. The pools are small . The time we were leaving the pool became clouldy and steps were slippy . Didn't see anyone cleaning it . We did speak to a few people who said the same.
The adult only pool. We spoke to a few people who refused to go in due to the smell of urine . I cant say I notice. Did see a lot of dead flys and finger nails. This pool was clear.
Quite pool a nice relaxing pool and the volleyball pool is good we spent most of our time there. Not sure what the young children pool was like as our sons were too.

Beach
Beach is beautiful there is free water sports. We loved . They offer a boat trip too. I recommend this most of the day snorkeling, cave swimming, Rick's Cafe, Nine mile beach. All drinks are including. ( cheaper than Tui )
Stake house we went twice. I would only recommend the stake, as my son had a burger wasn't the best . They made me a birthday cake which was a surprise. (Thank you if your reading)

Overall it would have been 5 * if it wasn't for the lack Entrainment for teenagers.
Maybe a games room or an inflatable slide for older children. Some think as I think the hotel forgets this age range.

If you do have small children there is things for them to do. Pool slides . Club. And evening programme.

First time in jamaica we loved it the people are really friendly. The island is beautiful.

Thank Rui for a fantastic holiday

Would go back

Room was great and very clean
We were lucky we had a good location
Right value
Entertainment team is the best in this hotel , they were amazing
Food is good but we’re expecting lobsters in the menu but wasn’t
Main restaurant is great
Steak house was good but don’t get the plate for 2 not the best
The only bad thing was our flight was in the morning and we had to leave the room at 5 am and there was no bellman to come and take our luggages and we were second floor so disappointing last 10 minutes as we were told that someone will come then we had to Cary our luggages by ourselves
But all in all hotel experience is great and clean and everyone does their best to please you!
Thank you Riu staff!

Exceptional staff in all areas!

We had an amazing time here mid September 2025. So good we have already booked to return. The refurb has really upgraded the place, it’s so aesthetically pleasing & we could see a lot of money has been spent. But the part that wowed us the most was the staff, wow they work tirelessly from morning till night & never heard one complaint.

The entertainment staff are fabulous !!
Big shouts to Shadow, Skittles, King, Lady Shin shin but ALL were brilliant with us and the kids. They interact so well with all the guests, ive stayed at many Rius in Jamaica but this time really stood out for us: the shows they put on were so well thought out and really entertained us daily. The neon & white parties were fantastic. They blew us away!

The bar staff, housekeeping, gardeners, resturant, reception staff are all so friendly and cannot do enough to help guests.

My only negative is the jerk hut is no longer on the beach. It just doesnt have the same vibe as where they now serve jerk chicken and pork in the adult pool bar. The bar area is covered in birds and loads of bird poo which is off putting. The serving area also gets dirty. The jerk hut was a well loved aspect of the Riu’s in Jamaica and its a shame these are no more.

Big well done to all staff - you are amazing!

Short and sweet

I will try to keep this short & sweet - people that complain about this resort must be extremely hard to please/spoiled or have had a freak incident -
I have been very lucky to have stayed at a few luxury resorts and Riu Negril is right up there, the people and vibe at at the top infact. It’s spotless, pools are fantastic, beach is gorgeous- the people work their asses off and are happy and all round beautiful people. We will be returning next year with kids in tow. Well done guys

Would recommend, “but”!

I would recommend the RIU Negril, but with a caveat on the quality of the food and entertainment. With that said, the overall service from the staff was exceptional. I want to say thinks to Anthony (breakfast buffet) and Chad (breakfast buffet and lunch) for their excellent service. Although the RIU is not known for 5-star service, they provided a 5-Star service to us. Thanks to them both.

Many pluses and a few negatives

Just returned from a 8 day stay at Riu Negril. Overall we had a very good stay. Beautiful calm water, beach before entry into the water is a bit sharp so I would recommend water shoes, however, the water was calm, warm and beautiful.

Buffet was always well stocked with a tasty variety of food, fruits and juices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Steakhouse restaurant was very good and would highly recommend, the others , not so much.
Diana, Anthony and Ingrid are awesome servers and the entertainment team is one of the most energetic group that I have ever encountered.

For the few negatives that I would like to mention, bellboy services are limited and slow, you might end up taking care of your own luggage's, with no elevators and some distance from the lobby to buildings 3 and 4 this is an issue .

Secondly, AC was out for 2 days and still out when we left.

It would also help if there is a few more wash stations to get the sand off you feet after leaving the beach.

No countertop in the bathroom, ladies need some space for make up lol .

Please ensure that cooks wash their hands with soap, especially after handling raw meat, witnessed many instances when this was not done and not happy about this. Some tables in the dining room gives you a view of how the food is being cooked / grilled.

Overall, we were happy with many aspects of the Resort but would love to see the issues mentioned above taken into consideration, food handling practices must be a priority.

THE STAFF MAKE IT SPECIAL

Okay, the first thing I want to talk about is the staff. Nothing is too much trouble. I want to give a BIG shoutout to AMELIA on the front desk. When we arrived on 24th September we were booked into Block 3. I have issues with walking so asked to be moved closer to the Reception area. Amelia could not have been more helpful! By 26th, we were in Block 1 - ground floor - which is what we requested. She told us to leave our packed cases in our old room, and sure enough they were in our new room, waiting for us.
The food is plentiful and there is something for everyone. Be prepared for curried goat; cows foot and octopus along with the usual staples of All Inclusive. Island Cove or Pepe's for lunch. Wine on offer is really nice. There is a smoking area near the Plaza Bar (by all the restaurants) and the staff are happy to provide ashtrays. You can sit down with a coffee from the Sports Bar or an alcoholic drink and enjoy a smoke. The rooms are lovely. Huge shower! We had 2 double beds in our room. They are SUPER comfy and we loved the amount of space they provided. Now the real gem: The Caribbean Sea. Oh my word!!! As someone who suffers with vertigo, I have struggled to keep my balance in the sea on previous holidays. The waves swirling around my feet made me feel unsteady and so I avoided it. This place is so different. The sea is like a millpond most of the time. Not only did I venture 12 feet into the water ( a lot for me as I'm not a confident swimmer ) I also managed to swim a little. You will see Jamaicans walking up and down the beach offering inflateables; hats; jewellery and weed. Just say ' no thank you ' and they leave you alone. Be aware, the prices are over- inflated so don't get caught out and find yourself feeling obliged to buy. Kids would love this beach. It's safe and calm. Look out for the shoals of tiny, electrc blue fishes in the morning. They come quite close to you...it's lovely to see. Now for the kicker: The sun here is DEADLY. I got sunstroke from one morning without sunscreen. It was our first full day and it just slipped my mind. As I write, my chest is burning bright red and, whilst (thankfully) it isn't enough to ruin the holiday, it certainly hasn't helped. You will need a sunfactor 30 minimum here. Children will need factor 50. The heat is unbelievable. In the afternoon, the pool is like stepping into a bath at home! The sea is a bit cooler but not much! Last night we experienced a storm. My partner said the rain was hammering down at 1a.m. - I slept through it.
Thursday night is Riu Party night. It's loud and colourful with plenty of music to dance the night away. Would I recommend it? Yes. But be aware: The hotel had issues with the air-con going down for 2 days during our stay. It didn't affect us, but some said it was unbearable. Oh, and be aware also that, in Jamaica, the coach drivers all drive like they're on speed. If you're of a nervous disposition, get a private transfer. Other than that, no complaints. Again, the staff here are awesome!! Please - tip a couple of dollars when you are served at the bar. At dinner we tipped 3 - 5 dollars
The big one for me is the housekeeping staff. These ladies work tirelessly to provide a clean, comfortable place for you to enjoy your holiday. We leave $5 on the bed every single day. God knows they deserve it. Thank you to ALL the staff for an amazing holiday ❤️

Great stay after the remodel

Love the new upgrades that have been done with the remodel. Our room was very comfortable. Staff is super friendly. Food was good. We did have a challenge getting reservations for the ala carte restaurants, but other than that our stay was wonderful.

No AC, no good.

Hotel stay was going pretty well until all of the AC broke in most of the hotel during a heat wave. Even the staff was melting, I felt so sorry for them. The hotel did nothing to help and just kept saying it would be fixed soon but never did. Now after complaining they are offering a measly $157 Canadian. Not very good customer care. I don't think I will ever go back to a Riu again!

The transformation of Riu Negril

RIu Negril is a 5* hotel l have visited at least 7 times! I went in June 2025 to the upgraded version…
Rooms - beautiful BUT avoid the ground floor if you can’t handle bugs!
Food - the breakfast was excellent traditional Jamaican food (I ate until my belly bus!) the Italian is 5* and offered the best Riu food ever!
Main restaurant- Very very repetitive, lukewarm food so book the online options instead!
Entertainment- phenomenal shows then full stop every evening! It has lost the special atmosphere and enjoyment for all as the staff are not as friendly due to the “stooch” people who are too posh to smile, say good morning or party) new clientele! Bring back the old staff like Spotlight from Tropical Bay and SpongeBob and see the place transform! Good Riu but a shadow of its former glory!

More than expected

What a great hotel, the staff were very helpful and friendly, the rooms were clean, tidy and comfortable the mini bar was topped up every other day.
The food had plenty of choices and was well presented.
The hotel site was all ways cleaned by gardening teams, as was the pools. If I had one gripe, it was that the quiet pool should be adults only as the kids get excited. Above all that, I still give it 5 stars, thankyou hotel Riu Negril staff, for making a once in a lifetime holiday unforgettable.

Amazing

Check in: we arrived at 7pm local time, we were greeted off our transfer by a amazing man called Lennox, who promptly asked a staff member to get us a rum punch, he then took all our cases and told us to come to him when we had our room number. At reception they gave us a room in block 3 on the 3rd floor, I asked for a ground floor room as I have osteoarthritis in my left knee, and the member of staff (sorry cant remember his name) had no problem changing it to a ground floor room, lennox then took all our luggage to our room and we were now in block 4 the very last one, he did it with a smile and a fist bump 😀 10/10

The room: the room was beautiful, clean and spacious with a queen sized bed verycomfortable, it has a mini bar with optics that had, gin, vodka, brandy and of course rum included. The fridge has soft drinks, red stripe and water, there is also a coffee machine.
The bathroom is very spacious with a water fall shower and also a regular shower head, it has shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and also had face flannels normally its just towels. 10/10
Facilities: this hotel has a lot to offer, there are 4 swimming pools 1 is a swim up bar, thy also have a separate area with a slide and water sprinkler for the kids its called riu land.
This hotel offers a lot of free water activities in the sea. Peddle boats, kayaking, sailing, scuba gear and catamaran (sailing licence needed for sailing boat and catamaran ) 10/10
The beach: has a lot of debris from the sea but the staff are constantly raking it to keep it clean.
There is a bar on the beach called bobs bar, it has amazing cocktails and the staff are very friendly. 8/10
Entertainment: the entertainment staff here work so hard, I really don't know how they do it all day and night in that heat, but they are always happy and smiling, they always have something around the swim up bar to keep ypu entertained (please note the swim up bar is for adults only)
Shadow,Bryan,vanilla,skittles,
Toothpick amd the rest of the entertainment crew are all amazing 👏 10/10
Bar staff: now here's where we had a little problem a lot of the staff here dont like white people, they screw their faces up at you and you can clearly see they only say something if they really have to, we did come across chantoy and anthoney who were the polar opposite and couldn't do enough for us, very polite and so friendly 😉 6/10
Drinks: they have a good selection of drinks and make lovely cocktails the bob and Rita was our favourite we swapped out the rum for vodka 😀
Food: this hotel has 7 restaurants the main buffet one called green island that had a amazing choce of foods for breakfast and dinner.
Lunch was served at the island cove, or you can have pepes food that serves tacos, perk chicken and rice salad ect..
The kulinarium served gourmet food (booking required)
The steak house (booking required) we went here twice it was amazing 👏
Luigi is a Italian restaurant (needed booking) we went here food was amazing 👏
Mandalay Asian restaurant (no booking) its a buffet style restaurant.
The American country this is a 24 hour sports bar and restaurant, yea you can eat and drink all night lol
It serves hotdogs, burgers, chicken wings and chips. And alcohol all night 👍 10/10
Evenings: there is entertainment every night it does repeat every week but that's a normal thing in amy hotel. Apart from Thursday nights they alternate between a neon party and a white party 🥳 10/10

SMOKING POLICY
This is a no smoking hotel. There is designated smoking areas. But the rules are very loose.. even more so if you are smoking marajuana some ppl were smoking in the hotel lobby and nothing was said 5/10

Overall this hotel is top tier and 90% of the staff are amazing. Especially chantoy, lennox and anthoney.. we had a amazing 12 nights here and felt very comfortable and welcome.. thank you riu you smashed it 😊

Honest feedback from a disabled guest

I wanted to share my experience as a non–wheelchair using disabled guest during my recent stay. Whenever I book holidays, I always email ahead to request a ground-floor room close to the main facilities. As a Riu Gold member, my requests have always been acknowledged and often exceeded — until this visit, unfortunately.

On arrival, I was allocated a room right at the end of Block 1 (Room 1064), which made access to restaurants and pools quite difficult. When I called to ask about a room closer to the amenities, I was told (rather abruptly) that the hotel was at full capacity, so no change could be made. I completely understand that room requests can’t always be guaranteed, but I was disappointed to later hear that some able-bodied guests had been moved without issue.

Because of the distance and lack of accessibility, I found the walk to the main areas extremely challenging. The long treks really took a toll on my joints, and on several occasions I had to skip lunch or dinner simply because I couldn’t manage the walk. For guests with mobility challenges, accessibility really matters, and in this area the resort sadly fell short.

There was only one accessible toilet available on a resort that accommodates around 600 guests, which made things quite inconvenient. Given that the property was newly renovated in December 2024, I expected more inclusive design and updated facilities for guests with varying needs.

That said, there were still some lovely positives worth mentioning. The grounds and gardens are beautifully maintained, and the maintenance and gardening staff do a fantastic job. A special mention to Lennox, Akeem, and all the staff at Bob’s Bar — they were consistently friendly, helpful, and a real credit to the resort.

The food was excellent across all restaurants, with a great range of options and quality that lived up to Riu’s usual standards. My only disappointment was being unable to dine at the Italian restaurant due to the stairs.

Overall, this is a beautiful resort in a stunning part of Jamaica, but I do feel Riu could do more to make it genuinely inclusive and accessible for all guests. My feedback is shared in the hope that it helps improve the experience for others with disabilities in the future. While this stay didn’t quite live up to my past Riu experiences, I’m hopeful these issues can be addressed so that every guest — regardless of mobility — can enjoy everything this resort has to offer.

Wonderful stay

Just returned from 2 weeks here. Was a fab resort , food was excellent , staff were friendly , pools clean and rooms cleaned everyday to a high standard. Locals on the beach friendly and respectful. Fabulous seaside for snorkelling.

Only couple of downers were, room smelt very damp on arrival , but there was no damp anywhere. The Italian restaurant is advertised as a la carte but it was definitely not . One lifeguard was particularly rude a couple of times.

Tui reps were wonderful. Would stay again if fancied a nice all inclusive break for relaxing and snorkelling.

Return to this hotel after 14 years

We first went to this hotel 14 years ago we tried to book it last year, but the hotel was undergoing a refurbishment, so we ended up booking the palace next door so this year we managed to book back here.
On arrival, We managed to book a swim up room I must say the person we dealt with at the reception was brilliant. It was a young man. Can’t remember his name the room we booked was 2018 in block two the room itself was very nice. The only complaint we had was the room was cleaned very late in the day between 330 and four we would come back to the room after spending the day on the beach. and all you want to do is get a shower but we had to wait for housekeeping to come with fresh towels we did on a few occasions tell her to leave the room and just and just took the fresh towels. We found that if you left the shower till later there would be no hot water so we liked to have a shower about 4 pm. Think this must be a bit of an issue with the water on speaking to a few other people in the block said the same. Food.
We have stayed in lots of RIU hotels over the years, the buffet restaurant you can always find something you like we used the steakhouse restaurant twice while We was there that was nice. Bars.
We only used two bars when we was there one in reception and the sports bar the bar staff were brilliant. I will post a picture of the staff they are Credit to the hotel they really made our holiday with laughing and joking. Staff. Wherever you go, you get a good staff and they bad staff. Sunbeds. One thing I liked is the amount of sunbeds there was on the beach and around the pools so there was no need to get up early to get one. Overall this was a brilliant holiday I would even go to say it’s better than the palace down the road which you pay more for. I will definitely recommend this hotel to people. This was really enjoyable. Return to this hotel.
