Not the luxurious wow we expected 😢

Summary before my waffle
Don’t expect super luxury, great setting, decent food, staff overall friendly (not reception) clean (unless there’s a storm it’s takes them a while to catch up) lots of Americans who start drinking very early!
Loud music all day at the main pool.
Extras are very very expensive!

Set the scene we visited Antigua 25 years ago for our honeymoon but after paying for the wedding we couldn’t afford to stay at sandals so fast forward 25 year and now in our 50s for our anniversary we thought yes let’s do it!

I honestly expected sheer luxury and relaxation with lovely staff and peaceful pool by the beach like our independent hotel on our honeymoon but with much more luxury I was imagining reminiscent of when we stayed at moon palace Mexico a few years ago but sadly I was wrong!
There was work going on at the hotel which is fine improvements need to be made BUT maybe a heads up, only one lift and it didn’t stop at our floor (5) from inside the lift, not an issue for us we like steps but if you can’t do steps make sure you’re not on 5.
The room was as pictured and clean but would not have held up on a episode of 4 in a bed UK ( if you know you know 🤣)
The staff on a whole were friendly but some were just a bit rude! I felt maybe they favoured the American guests more than the UK.
We tried to book a trip to St John’s and were almost dismissed by the uninterested reception who proceeded to answer the phone ignoring us while we decided if we could go on a Tuesday (our actual anniversary and the only day they offered) felt very rude for someone in a customer facing job.

The pool pictured on the main website, socials etc along the beach was boarded up (again no prior warning) I did ask reception a couple of times when / if it would be back in action so I could add to my review but they were well again a tad rude.

The main pool is so loud! Music, DJ, quizzes and games may really suit you but not the classy sandals I imagined more like a rowdy Benidorm hotel but that may just have been while we were there but great for people watching ! I also wish people wouldn’t eat in the pool I know there are tables but really get out to eat your food!! Must be an American thing!?

At no point were we able to say we were celebrating a big anniversary (thought there would have been an app of some communicate from virgin holidays who we booked with!) we had planned on asking what was available after booking the St John’s trip but the rude receptionist put me right off wanting to ask.

The barefoot by the beach restaurant is beautiful, calm and just what I imagined on the sand with amazing sea views very reminiscent of when we were here 25 years ago.
The staff are outstanding and when we booked champagne for our Anniversary meal they made a real fuss and did us a beautiful dessert (thank you to all who worked the evening 14th October you are truly outstanding as what you do)

The bayside again if you are sat at the right table has wonderful views of the beach and sea. The breakfast is great the evening menu is samey especially for vegetarians

The onsite pub the drunken duck has a real pub vibe and its own Peggy Mitchell 🤣 DO NOT ask were your food is even after waiting nearly an hour and have the people next to you order after you, eat and leave while you wait because boom Peggy will not be happy 🤦🏼‍♀️

If you are veggie (none fish eating) / vegan your choices are limited but there is usually one sometime two choices on the menu.
Breakfasts is lovely you can go to a buffet style one that’s air conditioned and one by the beach or you can also pick from a menu at Eleanor’s again a sea view and lovely variety.
The beach is wonderful the sea is so blue and lovely to walk along, there are vendors but if you say no they do walk on.

If you are scared of cats or allergic this is not for you! There are so many beautiful kitty’s and the will lay on the lounges/ sofas etc on an evening when humans have vacated them.

Room service is spot on we did have one day when no one came and we had to call down for coffee and milk for morning and the bins where overflowing but it was the day after a storm so guess they were catching up.

The reception team in the med hotel need to up their game they didn’t make us feel welcome but the serving staff are are great.

Overall we have had a lovely anniversary very relaxing (even with the booming music by the pool 🤣) and the sea and stunning views did not disappoint maybe sandals isn’t what it was 25 years ago or maybe we had a lucky escape then but memories have been made.

Great vacation resort

Sandals Antigua is beautiful with amazing views. The pool is large and has rafts which is unlike other sandals resorts I have been to. Highly recommend the spa and Threcia and Andrea in particular for massages. They did an incredible job, were super friendly and very helpful. Well worth the money. The best restaurant on the resort is Soy by far. Their food was incredible. Best sushi I’ve ever had. House keeping was also amazing and did an incredible job keeping our room clean and even coming back later if we were still in the room their first time through. Everyone on the resort was super friendly.

Magical visit to the best beach ever. What a beautiful holiday

Just home from Sandals Antigua. What an amazing holiday. The food was superb, especially Kimonos and Eleanor’s. Staff were very friendly and would like to mention Beanca who is a trainee waitress at Barefoot restaurant. Three weeks into her training and she was excellent.

The whole place was immaculate, loads of sun beds, although we spent most of our time on the beach as the sea is so warm and lovely to swim in.

The evening entertainment was in the whole very good. An excellent jazz band played one evening, and a reggae band who were great too.

Thank you Sandals for a great stay. We will be back

Great relaxing vacation getaway

We had a fantastic trip! The activities in the Med Pool were fun and interactive - Amanda, JuJu and DJ Sky did a great job making sure there was a fun vibe at the pool. Our butlers were Corri, Hunter and June and all were great! Marie in the Med Bar was top notch - great drinks and conversation. Sushi at Soy is a must-do.

The pool was huge and a great place to spend the day. Beautiful beach. The evening was a bit subdued it seemed - would have preferred that the party type things started a little earlier but they were fun activities when we did go (karaoke, live music, etc).

Returned To Where We Got Married 25 Years Ago And Not Disappointed

We have just come back from Sandals Antigua for our 25th wedding Anniversary. We actually got married there originally, so it was an amazing trip down memory lane. The resort has expanded a lot since 2000, and to be honest, we were nervous. That anxiety quickly dissipated with the warm welcome on arrival, a lovely room, and a super-friendly staff. We have visited many Sandals over the years, and no this is not the most palatial of their resorts, but it retains its authentic Caribbean charm, and for that I applaud Sandals. Please don't change it.

All of the staff were friendly and helpful; they could not do enough.

A special shout out for Latisha in the Loyalties office, who was so helpful organising our loyalty points and membership status. We were so pleased we booked to go back next year for 11 nights with our friends. We would not have done this on resort if it had not been for her.

We were also delighted to find the lady who married us 25 years ago was still there and she remembered us! Thank you Lydia.

A hidden gem of the resort is the Piano Bar. A nice relaxing air conditioned bar, great for pre or post dinner drinks. The lady that works there is so freindly and again has been there for 17 years so Sandals must be doing something right. We didn't catch her name.

All in all, a great holiday and a relaxed and friendly resort.

Disappointed by Service Despite Stunning Setting – Honest Mid-Holiday Review

Couple from the UK, mid-40s | 2-week stay | Booked via Virgin Holidays

We’re currently halfway through our stay at Sandals Antigua, and while the location is undeniably beautiful—with breathtaking sunsets, a gorgeous beach, and a lovely pool area—the overall experience has been underwhelming, especially considering the premium price.

🌴 Arrival & Room Confusion

Our welcome began well with cold towels and a relaxed check-in area. However, things quickly turned frustrating. Despite booking a Mediterranean Oceanview Grande Luxe Club Level Suite (upgraded from a walkout garden room), we were initially placed in a ground floor walkout. After some back-and-forth with staff—who seemed surprised when checking the system—we were eventually moved to the correct room. The process lacked transparency and left us feeling misled. We were also charged $400 to the room at check-in without prior notice.

🍽️ Dining & Service

Food options are limited, with only one buffet available for breakfast and lunch. Three restaurants require advance booking via the app, but once on-site, the app becomes unusable for reservations—a detail never communicated beforehand. Service across the resort has been consistently slow. We’ve waited long periods for drinks, had breakfast orders forgotten, and even received cold food at the English pub. At one restaurant, we waited 30 minutes to be seated and another 25 minutes before receiving a drink.

🛠️ Construction & Facilities

The resort is currently undergoing construction, which detracts from the overall ambiance and tranquility. This was not made clear at the time of booking and has been a noticeable disruption.

💆 Spa & Extras

The spa is significantly overpriced for the level of service offered. We expected a more luxurious experience given the cost, but it didn’t deliver.

🏖️ Other Observations

The no-tipping policy is inconsistently enforced.

Sunbeds are quickly reserved by butlers—often unused for hours—making it difficult to find a spot unless you’re up early.

Drink service is slow and inconsistent throughout the resort.

⚠️ Final Thoughts
While the scenery and facilities are impressive, the service, dining experience, and lack of communication fall short of expectations. We’ve stayed at better resorts for less money with far superior hospitality. At best, this feels like a 3-star experience masked by a 5-star setting.

Food/resort/customer service

The beach was beautiful and overall good experience. The younger staff were so much friendlier than the other staff. Some of the older staff made us feel like we were a burden to be there. There was a bad storm and they had some internal problems- 3 of the 4 lunch restaurants were closed or moved location and there was no communication. They could have easily made a notification at the pool (Dj was playing) or sent out a notification on the app. We walked all the way across the resort to be told that 2 of the restaurants were closed and had been moved to other side of the resort where we were prior to trying to eat lunch. Lunch was chaos- which we understood something was going on, however, we were seated and went to the Buffett and were half way through our meal and not a single staff member came by to fill our water glass or take our drink order (1st thing that normally happens) and they weren’t understaffed there were a ton of staff walking around. It took my husband getting up and flagging someone down just so we could get water to drink. The food was okay nothing to rave about. Service was okay. We certainly had better service and overall friendless at sandals in st Lucia.
One thing I was super impressed with was how well they took care of the cats on their property. I’m a huge animal lover and they all looked so healthy and we were told by one of our waiters Chad that all the cats are accounted for (237 total) most of them were fixed and they knew which ones were not. They had cat cafes (feeding areas) all over the property. This was not the case in st Lucia and broke my heart so to see the cats here so happy and well cared for and they loved the staff warmed my heart!
Room was nice and spacious. Bathroom was extremely humid.

Dreadful service and attitude but wonderful location

Well one cannot criticise the location, the bay is lovely. Watersports choice was quite good too, I enjoyed the Scuba refresher.
Service was dreadful though - apart from 3 or 4 individuals.
The corporate service though, at reception, or concierge, or the club or however they styled it was very poor.

3 issues to begin with;
The balcony and the door to the balcony were filthy. On checking-in this was noted straightaway to reception - it was never cleaned.
The second day, our room was not serviced (bed, towels etc). We reported 3 separate times to reception, and it was serviced at 18:30pm
There was a horrible stain above the shower - it looked like blood - twice reported and eventually painted over, although it had seeped back through after 3 or 4 days.

Summary of the over-riding issue:
Thursday night there was a tropical storm, that lasted till mid afternoon on the friday. This was surprise to anyone as it had been forecasted.
3am Friday morning, my wife gets out of bed to use the toilet. In the dark she slips and falls on a puddle of water. Turns out water was pouring through the ceiling in the toilet and had flooded the whole front of the room.
Very long story short, we reported this to reception at 08:45am, and there were demonstrably unsympathetic. They said they would get it cleaned up.
At one of the regular check-ins, we were told that as they were at 98% capacity we could not be moved.
Receptionist also told us that her home may be leaking too, which was sad to hear.
Found a cleaner at 15:00 who did not know of our problem, she got someone to look at it 10 minutes later, who promised us a move. We moved at 18:30, 2 doors along to a room that had never been used since we arrived.

The flood, the storm is not the issue, it is the lack of care, concern or action from those at reception that was the problem.

In many visits to the Caribbean this hotel is the only one where you feel most of the staff are just there to collect a wage, doing the bare minimum, begrudgingly to tolerate the holiday makers.

Waitresses in the Barefoot restaurant, the Coral restuarant and one in Elaines were the very obvious exceptions. The cleaner was fantastic, as were the trainee receptionists - I do hope they are not brought down to the level of the existing staff.

A great holiday despite many minor shortfalls

We went in September – 4 of us on a regular bi-annual family holiday. This was the first time all 4 of us had travelled to Antigua together. Me and my wife went nearly 30 years ago to Jolly Beach Resort.
We have all been to Sandals before over various times (between us 3 trips to Bahamas and St Lucia). This was the biggest resort either of us had been to.
Overall, the holiday was a success. The property is fairly extensive and a big choice of restaurants and bars. Set on a large beach with plenty of pool options, every day was easy to get a bed wherever we were. We spent most of our days on the beach. The sea is fairly calm and as warm as you’d expect – occasionally not as crystal clear as we’d like when there was a storm out to sea, other days very clear.
Quite a few vendors who, with a simple and friendly no thanks just moved on. They were no trouble at all.
The “resident” beach dog – who we called noodles (I think she is known by other names too) was often happy to see us. Sometimes playful, sometimes just thankful for a snack, other times just happy to lie in the shade.
Most of the staff (with a very rare exception) were fantastic – especially when you make an effort to engage, which we did during our staff. I stupidly have forgotten most names (Marie at the pool bar, Jahilda, DeAndre, Oliver, to name just a few- sorry to all those great people I can’t remember)
Some of the restaurants were outstanding, especially the Sushi Bar (our favourite) where the chefs were happy to discuss what was on offer, make recommendations and answer most of the daft questions we asked.
We tried them all and with the exception of 1 would rate them all as worth a try. The 1 we wouldn’t was simply due to most miserable member of staff, which meant we just avoided it after our first visit.

Evening entertainment was, on the whole, pretty good. The silent disco was a 1st for me and hilarious. So much fun we went again in our 2nd week.
The piano bar was always busy and always entertaining – we often joined in as part of the song selection and singing too.
Although we did have a great time (which we do everywhere we go) – why be miserable on holiday?! There were a number of things that in isolation weren’t huge but, shouldn’t happen. Such as bars running out of some beer, mint, banana etc. Some restaurants running out of food and not telling you – just serving up what they had. Breakfast restaurant running out of tea and butter!
Rooms often not stocked with tea, milk etc.
The “pool” tables in the pub (which are actually mini-snooker tables and so awful pockets) that had slopes and curves on them so much it was like playing a golf green. Not enough cues and no scoreboard for the snooker.
Sometimes running out of towels around the beach or pools.
We had to call maintenance once to get a loose mirror fixed in our room – that took another 3 calls and 2 days before it was finally sorted.
All these things shouldn’t happen and detract from the overall experience.
However, the grounds are great. The beach is excellent and at the time of year we visited plenty of space.
Finally, 1 of our party went scuba diving every other day while we were there. He said it was great, both in terms of the experience and the facilities/crew, so if that’s your thing you’ll enjoy it.

Lovely hotel with excellent staff

A lovely 10 day stay.
The stay got off to a bad start when we were picked up promptly from the airport and then delivered to the hotel. We had checked in online but still waited 45 minutes to get allocated a room. This was disappointing. We had a club level room in the Almond Tower. When I asked how much longer we would wait (after 30 minutes when we had a cold drink and towel on arrival) they said they were very busy. They offered another cold drink but this never arrived.
Once we got to our room things improved.
The room is old colonial style and a little dated but roomy and immaculately clean with lovely views from our balcony. The room and area around the room were quiet. It was a short walk to the sea, main pool, restaurants etc. The walk was through beautiful grounds which were immaculately kept.
Apart from check in service throughout the hotel was lovely. Sometimes it was a little slow when restaurants were busy, but they always apologised and to be honest we like a laid back meal rather than a rushed one. Every member of staff was helpful, kind, cheerful and willing to go the extra mile.
The beach is clean and has plenty of loungers but ones with shade go early and the beach is very hot. The restaurants (Barefoot, Bayside and Eleanors) by the beach are all excellent. Breakfast at Bayside was a really good buffet and Eleanors offered a great cooked breakfast and table service. Both do nice mimosas. Barefoot was really good for lunch and dinner. We were able to book any of the restaurants needing reservations without difficulty and most do not need reservations. The Japanese was fun. Marcos was very nice and the buffet starters are lovely. We did not like the food at the OK Corral but that was due to our preference rather than anything wrong with the food.
The bars are busy but staff work incredibly hard in the swim up bar at the main pool and in the Drunken Duck. Again they always apologise for the wait.
The main pool is noisy at times but we just chose loungers away from the speakers and that was fine. There is plenty of poolside entertainment/games if people want them. The evening entertainment was excellent. The piano bar singalong was good fun.
We have been to Antigua before and other Caribbean destinations but this was our first Sandals experience. I would say it is cut above most of the other chains but not quite up to the standard of the European IKOS chain which has been exceptional when we have stayed with them. I would happily try another Sandals and if I was returning to Antigua we would probably choose Sandals again.
Overall we had a very relaxing fun stay with no complaints after the initial check in.

Sandals Grande Antigua

This is our second time visiting Sandals Grande Antigua. Our first visit was in August 2020 right at the beginning of covid shutdowns. With the restrictions that were in place we decided to give Sandals Grande Antigua another visit without the restrictions.
We had butler service and our room choice was HS, located in the Poinsettia Building. This room had a nice garden view and a partial view of the ocean.
The property was well maintained and loved walking the pathways surrounded by beautiful flowering shrubs and flowers. The beach was amazing with calm waters and was very clean.
The food overall was good with the exception of Kimonos and OK Corral. The OK Corral menu had recently changed their menu from good to bad. Even our waiter stated that the change had not been received very well. He said it was a corporate thing.
Soy was superb ate there multiple times where the sushi rolls are amazing. Big shout out to Sushi Chef Joven. He made us special rolls each time we came in.
Adult beverages were consistent across the property. The swim up pool bartended Oliver, made amazing drinks and an award winning Bloody Mary.
When visiting Café de Paris you must try the pistachio eclairs. Get them early they don’t last. We had had our butlers put them in our room every afternoon.
One down side, especially during the summer months is the majority of the restaurants our not enclosed so escaping the heat is non existent except for Mario’s, The Drunken Duck, Soy and Kimonos.
Sandals is during a total renovation of the Frangipani building at the very end of the resort by the spa.
Overall our stay was very enjoyable.
Final shout out to the staff members that made our trip enjoyable, Joven, sushi chef, Oliver, pool bar tender, and to our exceptional butlers; Charmaine and Nkosi.

Great vacation and love the Japanese restaurant.

We had a fabulous time at Sandals. We especially enjoyed the Japanese restaurant tonight. Chad was our waitor and was a delight. He gave us extra appetizers because we didn't pick his favorite so we could try it. He chose dessert for us and was just so sweet. When I was trying to take my husband's picture, he took a nice one of both of us. Great time. The whole resort has been fabulous. We eat like kings and are treated so special.

Don't waste your money - it's not at all the premium experience you think you're paying for!

Whilst the location of the resort is great with a fantastic beach, the holiday that we had was missing all of the premium touches that you're expecting to get when visiting Sandals.

Our room wasn't serviced for 3 days - 1 of which a member of staff had entered the room, turned on the "do not disturb" sign and then kindly left us a note to say they'd respected our privacy. This also happened to another guest whilst we were there and the lady had blamed her husband as he must have accidentally turned it on. She was very apologetic to him when we mentioned that it had happened to us also. We had to ask for towels which just get's boring after the third time.

The coffee machine in the club lounge was broken for 5 days. When I asked if we could get coffee we were just told no as the machine is broken. I enquired if there were other coffee machines in the hotel to be told, of course but we would need to go there to get them.

We were told to come back on a particular day to book restaurants only to be told that we must have misunderstood as that wasn't the process and all the restaurants were now full. It's amazing as all 6 of our party remembered them saying come back on Thursday for next week.

The restaurant servers are robotic - hi, my name is x, can I offer you some water. When taking our order, the person at the head of the table couldn't decide what she wanted, instead of moving to someone else the server just insisted on waiting until she had decided as they have a system to ensure people get the right meals. As expected, the first plate came out with the phrase "who is having the steak?" - laughable. All in all you feel like you're inconveniencing them by being there.

Then there are the ever present Spa ladies - they're very friendly but only interested in you buying a $100 spa treatment for $250 instead. You get asked multiple times a day - get used to it.

There are no people wandering round delivering what you need to you on the beach or round the pool as per the adverts - I think we saw 2 in 10 days and other than that you just go queue at the bar with the hundreds of other people waiting on 2 bar staff who were clearly overworked. There are other staff members lounging around waiting for drinks to go to the restaurant but that's got to fit in with the 2 bar staff. They regularly run out of glasses so you can occasionally get a semi-washed glass - yuck. You never get the same drink twice even if it's in the same round - it's just whatever the bar tender can reach. In 3 vodka and oranges we had 3 different brands of vodka and 2 different types of orange. Variety is of course the spice of life.

We enquired about hiring a taxi for a trip around the beautiful island of Antigua and whilst talking to the trip centre my wife casually asked a passing taxi driver if he took direct bookings. We were royally told off by the hotel staff that we weren't allowed to talk to taxi drivers and that we should book through the hotel. This was purely so that they could add the Sandals premium quoting us $600 for around 4 hours. The taxi driver (same guy) did it for $60 per hour.

Did we have a good holiday - yes.
Are Sandals ripping people off and underwhelming in their product - most definitely yes.
Will I ever go back to Sandals again ever - Definitely NOT.

There are far better hotels, for far less money with greater service elsewhere and these will be getting my hard earned cash next time round.
