Ask for Yisell, Shonny and Enrique!!

The stay has been amazing. Yisell and Shonny in the club lounge helped me surprised my wife for our anniversary. I emailed everything I wanted and they did more than what I expected. The bed full of flowers with the letter I emailed. They hand wrote it(beautiful cursive) drew a beautiful drawing on beautiful rustic paper . My wife cried when she saw this. They helped with reservations and suggestions.
Enrique served us on 9/18 at Under the sea restaurant. He went above and beyond with his service. Suggested great wines and lobster. Made us feel like family with how much he checked in. Everything he suggested we got and he did not steer us wrong. We loved the service so much I already made reservations and requested him to be our server again.

Broken A/C, ruined clothes and items and MOLD!!

My family and I stayed at the Parisio Maya which is basically the most expensive that gives you access to all of the property. On day 3 our AC went out and for 2 nights we suffered severe heat as our room built condensation and began to soak everything including clothes, the bed, the pillows, items etc. the smell was horrible. Things like chargers and headphones were damaged from the puddles of condensation they were sitting in and mold was growing on the walls and baseboards. We had someone come out to fix the AC twice but they said nothing was wrong!! Finally after a few hours we were able to get them to let us move rooms but a lot of our clothes were covered in mold. We had to throw away many outfits. We asked if they could cover our laundry expense and they initially agreed and then tried to come back and charge us for the full amount. Again I had to pull the concierge aside and explain the whole situation and show her that we were STILL finding moldy outfits (pictured) and then they finally agreed to cover the expense. They never once voluntarily offered to help us, we had to argue our way out of the toxic room we were stuck in as well as to get the laundry covered. Finally when we were checking out I asked the guy if there was anything they could do to help remedy the situation like reimburse the expense of the outfits we had to throw away, or reimburse the nights we were stuck in the room etc. he said no. They were not helpful at all throughout this poor experience.

Fun week for the family.

2nd time here 9 years apart. Just as we remember it + a water park now. An awesome resort if you like them big. You'll get your steps in making your way around. Lots of choices, very accommodating staff. More wild life on the property than I remember but that was a bonus. Check in and check out was super easy and much quicker this time. I rented a car through the hotel and it they made it very easy and convenient.

Such a great stay!

What a wonderful stay! Our room was wonderful (hint, a/c not cold enough? Call the front desk & they can adjust it remotely somehow). All of our dining experiences were great. The best part of the whole resort is the snake bar in the lobby. The staff there is just wonderful & they make an amazing martini!! But the highlight of our trip was seeing Oz perform. He is such an amazing asset to the resort, so talented & has been performing there for years!

Iberostar Maya for Dad and two sons

The Hotel lobby area is nice.
Rooms are average looking, depending on the villa, some rooms may need some upgrading.
The Bars are very good. Bartenders know what they are doing and courteous.
The food taste was average, not very tasty as other resorts I have stayed (e.g. Bahia Principe). The a-la cart rest are nicely decorated but the food was not very impressive.
Pools, water slides, and Lazy River were very good.

Fun stay but definitely not luxury

We had a fun stay as a family of 4. We have been to other Iberostar properties and this one was very similar. Staff is super friendly but the resort is a little worn. Room bathrooms could be updated (mold and shower doors that don’t shut properly), lazy river was underwhelming and in need of updates (broken lights, no tubes available most of the day), the food was ok (our favorite was Italian) but a lot of it is very greasy and bland. We did not swim on the beach (sargassum season and lots of jellyfish) but we were aware of this before booking. I was happy we went during offseason and saved a lot of money on booking. We would have been more disappointed if we paid full price as it is definitely not a luxury stay.

Really high hopes ending in disappointment and the feeling of over paying.

Overall I’d say we were underwhelmed and let down by the property. Was this a 5 -star? Yes, it WAS, no longer is it today IMO.

All the staff were pleasant, attentive and helpful. Did I want pool-service? No. But they were around and I was asked if I was Ok for drinks. Some people want more of that, I was ok with what I got. Keep that in mind if you expect to be offered a drink every 10 minutes while lounging poolside, they don’t come around as often as other resorts.

Food was mostly mediocre, buffet and a-la-cart, didn’t matter it bordered on meh and bleh it seemed. The only exception was whenever they served lunch poolside, tacos, noodles, paella, didn’t matter, it was all good. I also had paella at the buffet for dinner a few nights and it was good there too.

The overall cleanliness of the resort was acceptable. Did we have a fair amount of bird poop on our balcony that was there when we arrived and was never cleaned the whole time we were there? Yup! But the staff were very good at keeping the grounds and shared facilities cleaned. Our room although recently renovated had many details that required maintenance or simply some attention to detail. Much more than I would expect from a 5 star, especially in Mexico. They turn off the AC in the lobby overnight, so if you have an early checkout, you will for sure be sweating due to the heat and humidity. There was also minor power failures around the pool area while we were there and magically our AC turned off on it’s own. I’m not sure if it was coincidence, but having no AC overnight is not acceptable.

We found it odd to have this sense of disappointment since all the recent reviews and YouTube videos we saw were all incredibly positive. Until we spoke to 2 different groups of people who all had been to this property within the past 2 years and they both said that there was a noticeable difference in the hotel from their previous experience. All mentioned the food quality being poor as well as the overall maintenance and entertainment. They also complained that there were many closed facilities (probably due to low season, which I kinda expected). So, that was our “ah-ha” moment. I couldn’t help but feel like there might have been a management change that happened, because it didn’t seem to add up. On the surface the place is stunning, stay there a while and peel back the layers and you can see the impact of cost cutting when managers go too far. A lot more detail can be provided to enforce this argument, but honestly, those reading this and experienced what we did will know what I’m saying.

Also, although “convenient” the shopping center and all stores on site are a complete ripoff. They are not just a little bit expensive, they are outright extorting people who want to spend money. The staff will tell you the pricing is equivalent to what you find at the airport…lies. Keychains were all around $20CAD, at the airport…$8. Souvenir pen $12USD, airport $4. Don’t fall for it.

Was I able to relax? Sure. Did I feel like I overpaid for what I got and feel like I was taken advantage of? Yeah. This is an expansive resort, it’s huge, one should expect that the maintenance costs for a place like this would be shy-high. I would argue that’s the cost of doing business, before long the backlog of required maintenance will be enormous and too big a burden to come back from, and by then you will have enough people feeling like me who will not come back.

Maya is a place where you get a lot for your money. Two thumbs up.

This place was outstanding. We felt it was great what you get for the price. The complex is very large. If you stay at the Maya, you can go to three other connecting resorts while you’re here. The food is good. Some things were outstanding others were just okay. But definitely something for everyone.

Nine days at Maya with husband

Resort was fantastic. So beautiful and tons to see and do. My husband and I stayed 8 nights/9 days and were never bored. The pool was our favorite place to spend time. We did take advantage of all 4 resorts that we were able to visit on site and loved them all. We never walked away from any meal still hungry. The only resturaunt we were not a huge fan of was the Rodizio on the Del Mar/ Beach side. Our favorite restaurant was Under the Sea. I am glad we chose Maya as it does give full access to 4 resorts and also the elevators came in handy many times. Every staff member we came in contact with was always so nice. Neither of us have any real negatives about this resort. We will definitely return.

Fantastic 2nd Stay! Iberostar Entertainment Team Shines!

Incredibly long review ahead!

Dates: June 15 - 21, 6 nights

Family of 4, kids 9 & 11 plus Grandma & Grandpa

We last stayed here in October 2021 (still Covid-y) and had the BEST time so I was excited to try it again at a busier time with more people.

RESORT
This resort is JUST as beautiful as it was 4 years ago! It is SO clean, landscapers are constantly trimming and cleaning up debris, leaves, etc, and the lush tropical feel lets you know that you are really in Mexico. This resort is large, but with our kids so much older now, it really wasn’t that bad. If anything, it gave us a chance to walk off all the calories from food & drinks!

ROOMS
We were in building 61, a Junior Suite Near the Pool and this location was absolutely perfect. It was closer for us to use the bathroom in our room than the public restrooms. We had a ground floor suite and while it felt a tad bit damp at the end of the night, we slept completely comfortably and dry throughout. In comparison, we stayed at Iberostar Bavaro Suite in the DR in 2022 and our room was SO humid and never cool. This room was set for 21, although we requested them to turn it down to 18 (they never did), and with the fans on high, our sheets were dry and comfortable.
We had a double bed room with a pull out sofa and wound up pushing the beds together and putting the kids on the sofa bed. They were fine but we could have requested rollaways too.

The room itself is HUGE, especially compared to several other resorts we’ve been to, and while it is a bit outdated (despite the refreshing they did last year). We loved the amount of storage in the closets and under the TV console. We had more than enough space for all 4 of us.

In the bathroom, while there wasn’t a ton of storage in here, we made do with what was there. We just had to lay everything out on the sink. Some cons in here: the lighting is SO dark that it is very hard to do your makeup; I do wish there were a separate water closet for the toilet.

POOLS
Absolutely amazing! We loved how large they are and having the water slides, wave pool, and lazy river available made our stay so enjoyable (especially with the beach situation). The towel game is strong here, but we always managed to find at least one lounge chair even after returning from excursions. In reality, we only need one chair to throw our stuff even for a party of 6.

The swim up bar is awesome, but severely understaffed. We wound up just going to the pool bar instead. They made EXCELLENT drinks (definitely ask for specific liquor) that were not watered down one bit. Ask me (and my mom) how I know.

BEACH
We knew we were taking a risk going to this part of Mexico in June and sadly I had many local people tell me that this is probably the worst sargassum season in 10 years. It made the beach completely unusable during our stay. In our previous stay, we loved the beach and it’s gorgeous blue/green color.

STAR CAMP
I forced my kids to go at least once and they didn’t even want to come to the pool for the foam party. While they didn’t go a lot, they did enjoy Star Camp when they did attend. It’s a wonderful program with amazing staff.

DINING / RESTAURANTS
****Food is so subjective. We are not foodies, as in fancy food, but we like good food. And we found the food here to be good - even on this second stay. The reservation system stinks though. You only need reservations for La Geisha (hibachi at Maya), El Ranch (steakhouse at Maya), El Puerto (smokehouse at Beach), and El Rodizio (Brazilian at Del Mar). We only wanted the hibachi and Brazilian and were only able to get the hibachi. A concierge gave me info to check the app between 1 and 2pm because that’s when people need to cancel by plus they “supposedly” sprinkle in additional restaurants. I only saw reservations open for the day we were checking out and one time for La Geisha so who knows. For reference we checked in on a Sunday and I know the last time they opened up reservations on Saturdays so perhaps they still do that?

Here is where we dined:

La Marina - We had the lobster and surf & turf and everything was excellent. My dad had the steak (bacon wrapped filet) and it was delicious too. Service was great here and very attentive.

L’Etoile (french/gourmet) - French onion soup was yummy and both the steak frites and steak au poivre were pretty good as well. Not as tender as La Marina, but we enjoyed. The service was VERY slow. So slow that we ordered dessert and left after waiting 20 minutes for it and never received it.

El Museo - OUR FAVORITE! This is higher end italian and was absolutely delicious. We loved the antipasto “buffet” and also ordered the spaghetti carbonara, spicy rigatoni vodka, osso buco (mine and I love love loved it), lasagna, and ravioli busco. Not one complaint. For dessert we ordered the tiramisu, cannoli, and profiterol and again, so delicious. Service was excellent here.

Olivetti - More casual italian. For appetizers we ordered every single one of them and they were great, though I never received my mozzarella sticks and others did. My husband and I both remembered the carpaccio being better last time, but it was still good here. We ordered the chicken parmesan ( so good), cheese alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and carbonara and all were good, though the meatballs were a little salty. For dessert, we ordered one of everything and the best was the chocolate and vanilla ice cream truffle! The perfect amount.

La Geisha - We love hibachi dining and it’s always a fun experience. Unfortunately we could only get the 5pm seating but we made it work. The show was fun as usual and the food was pretty good. You go here for the atmosphere and if you like asian, it’s a good tasting menu.

Lemon & Spices - A greek / mediterranean restaurant, probably our 2nd favorite. The service was top notch here and we were surprised to see it a bit on the empty side, especially after tasting the food. We loved the family style Mezze platter appetizer as it gave us a sampling of a bunch of different greek foods. We ordered the Souvlaki for the table in lamb, steak, chicken, and shrimp and we loved all of it. Definitely don’t skip this restaurant. They have a dessert bar that is fun to sample a lot of different desserts.

Breakfast - We ate at both the Maya and Lindo breakfast buffets. They are the same except the Maya buffet is much less busy and has a mimosa bar.

Lunch - For lunch we mainly ate at the Olivetti buffet by the pool due to convenience. They have everything you need. Don’t skip the tacos - so good! We ate at the Lindo lunch buffet twice and it was good too with a large selection. We also grabbed snacks from the beach bar once or twice. I do wish they had a poolside snack shack like the beach for quick eats. We also had poolside paella twice and it was good, but not as good as we remembered from 2021.

BARS / DRINKS
The drinks are not watered down. Not one bit. I asked for specific liquor and they delivered, usually a Hornitos, soda and lime or Dos Equis. Don’t skip the espresso martinis in either the snake or lindo lobby bars! They were so good! We had excellent and very quick bar service everywhere except the swim up bar (just due to the number of people and needing probably 2 more bartenders).

ENTERTAINMENT
This is where Iberostar shines for us. They are always playing fun music by the pool, putting together games, or putting on a great show. The pool obstacle course, Wibit, is a ton of fun BUT if they are letting the crowd shake it, don’t try it. It’s way too dangerous. My husband and I both did it twice and the first time they just splashed us and threw yoga balls and the second they allowed the crowd to shake the entire inflatable and it definitely caused some injuries. The nighttime shows are really fun and the games before are a hoot, just as we remembered. The fire shows are awesome but get there early or even better, reserve a table if you can. They have a DJ after the show each night and will teach you all kinds of dances which is so much fun. We did go to the nightclub one night and felt sufficiently old haha. But we had a good time people watching.

OVERALL - would we go back? Yes. However it’s unlikely we will go back because there are a lot of other resorts we want to try.

Not a 5 star resort

Nowhere near 5* unless you have very low expectations. For Mexico level, all inclusive I would say 4* at best. For those who have stayed at nice 5* resorts with great food, service and rooms this place is more like a 3 - 3.5*. It’s essentially a supersize resort with 5 adjoining properties, mediocre service, they seemed to be short staffed everywhere. The food is below average in my opinion and rooms need a makeover as they felt worn and dated. The steakhouse was the worst experience of the trip. Service was awful, the server looked miserable and was not friendly at all. The steak and vegetables were delivered cold and must have been sitting out for several minutes in order for both dishes to be not even lukewarm. The highlight is definitely the beach, however for parts of the day they have games/competitions on the beach with staff doing a play by play commentary using a microphone with speakers blasting all over the beach making it impossible to relax or read a book. Upon checking in we were quickly directed to a salesperson trying to convince us to attend a ‘timeshare’ breakfast the following morning, which they refer to as ‘prestige hotel member’ which we thankfully refused, so avoid that unless you are actually interested in paying a fee to be an Iberostar member. Overall I would not recommend this resort. Spend your money elsewhere.

Where do we go next that could possibly compare to the beauty of your resort?

Hotel Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya
Attention: Guest Relations
Stay: September 2–9, 2025
Sabba Family, Party of 5

Dear Iberostar Team,

My family and I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya from September 2nd through September 9th. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the beauty of the resort and the warmth of your staff. The welcome with the cold towel and the pineapple-ginger drink was truly special — it was the most refreshing beverage we had our entire stay, and I wish it was available throughout the resort!

While we genuinely enjoyed many aspects of our vacation, I wanted to share some feedback that I hope will help you continue improving the guest experience.

Arrival & Check-In

We were warmly greeted, but after a long six-hour trip, our rooms were not yet ready, which was disappointing given that the resort didn’t appear overly busy. That said, Maria went above and beyond to assist us — helping us get situated, arranging restaurant options, and even following up personally to ensure we were comfortable. Her kindness and professionalism stood out, and she truly represents the best of Iberostar hospitality.

Timeshare Sales Encounters

While we appreciated Maria’s enthusiasm regarding the membership presentation, a later encounter with David at the lobby was very uncomfortable. His aggressive tone and refusal to take “no” for an answer created unnecessary tension and made us hesitant to approach the lobby afterward. This type of pressure dampens the relaxed atmosphere that Iberostar is known for.

Dining Experience

The specialty restaurant reservation system felt unnecessarily difficult. We weren’t able to secure dinner reservations until several days into our stay, and the process caused stress that could easily be avoided with a more guest-friendly system.
The specialty restaurants themselves were underwhelming — though the antipasto table at El Museo was a highlight, the overall quality did not reflect the standard of the resort. We found that the buffets, on the other hand, were excellent, with an impressive variety and freshness.

We also noticed that food labels and sauce descriptions were lacking or printed too small. This made it difficult to know what we were selecting, and we often found dishes spicier than expected.

Other Notes

During Members Week, we enjoyed a delicious fried meat dish at the guacamole buffet near the wave pool — it was outstanding, but we were never able to find it again or get clarification on what it was!

It would be wonderful if the resort offered a printed or digital list of specialty cocktails unique to Iberostar.

The “resort credits” system felt misleading. After such a significant investment for our family vacation, it was disappointing to learn that the credits could only be used by spending additional money.

Several outdoor servers and even a spa staff member were quite direct about tipping expectations, which made for some awkward moments.

Room Conditions (Rooms 6156 & 6157)

While the rooms were spacious and comfortable in layout, we experienced several maintenance and cleanliness issues:

-Dampness and persistent ants

-A broken foldout bed

-Mold in the bathtubs and a leaking shower (with about a one-inch gap in the door)

-Daily towel shortages, as they were often needed to dry the wet floors

-Stained towels and linens, which is really quite disgusting

Pools & Amenities

The pools were absolutely stunning — among the most beautiful we’ve seen anywhere. However, the design of the steps is concerning. There is a significant drop that isn’t clearly visible, and we witnessed several guests fall, including one carrying an infant, as well as all 5 of us getting cut or falling off of them. A simple warning sign could prevent future injuries.

Theater seating could also use attention — many chairs have deep, worn-in divots, making them uncomfortable for guests. Shows were entertaining, but sitting for them was almost impossible.

Final Thoughts

Despite these concerns, our family truly appreciated the resort’s beauty, the exceptional landscaping, and the friendliness of many staff members. We left with lasting memories and admiration for Iberostar’s vision of sustainability and family-centered luxury.

In fact, the only real dilemma Iberostar left us with is this: where do we go next that could possibly compare to the beauty of your resort?

Warm regards,
The Sabba Family
