A great holiday! Hotel great! Staff friendly and helpful, food 10/10. Beach beautiful even with all the seaweed staff worked extra hard to keep the beach beautiful. Our 2nd time returning here and will return again. Children and adults loved the activities during the day at the hotel and the beach. Rooms were cleaned everyday and very well done !

The best holiday !

I cannot say enough wonderful things about my stay at this hotel in Mexico – it was truly one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality that immediately made me feel at home.
The property itself is stunning – My room was spotless, spacious, and offered incredible views that made every morning feel magical. The attention to detail was noticeable everywhere, from the décor to the little touches that made my stay extra special.
The service was beyond exceptional. Every staff member I encountered went out of their way to ensure I had everything I needed. Whether it was offering local recommendations, arranging activities, or simply checking in to make sure I was comfortable, their dedication to guest satisfaction really stood out.
The food was another highlight – absolutely delicious, showcasing the best of local and international cuisine.including. A “kids option” Dining here was a treat in itself, and I looked forward to every meal.
On top of all this, the location was perfect – close enough to explore everything I wanted, yet peaceful enough to relax and unwind. Whether lounging by the pool, enjoying the scenery, or heading out for adventures, I felt I had the best of both worlds.
The beach was beautiful ! The pool on the beach was maintained & the beach restaurant was great also ! With friendly staff!
Not to mention how some water sporting activities were included !
I left with amazing memories and a strong desire to return. If you’re considering a trip to Mexico and want a truly unforgettable hotel experience, this is the place to stay. Highly recommended! Thank you all!

Know what the hotel offers before you book

We got this hotel, flight, and transfer for a steal (£1k per person for 2 weeks) so are basing this review on this basis.

This was our first time in Mexico - we travel frequently and use our hotels solely as places to sleep and eat.

Location: the location of the hotel in Playacar is great from a security and convenience standpoint. There are a handful of shops and restaurants in Playacar, and 5th Avenue is about a 30 minute walk, or a 5 minute ride on the beach shuttle (this stops both ways at the South East entrance to the Playacar resort on the way to/from the beach).

Room: The room is laid out like the other Riu hotels we’ve stayed in and is spacious and clean. The beds are on the firm side and the aircon and full sized fridge are somewhat noisy if you’re a light sleeper. As others have reported, the room did feel damp, unsure if this is commonplace given the humidity across the area or if this is a problem specific to this hotel. The walls are very thin, if you have noisy neighbours you will hear everything, we had 3 or 4 nights where people coming back from the numerous on-site events woke us up either banging doors or chatting and smoking on balconies in the early hours.

Food/Drink: Though limited offering in comparison to other Rius we’ve visited, the food was decent - neither of us were ill at any point during our visit and the dining areas were clean. It’s probably worth noting that the food offering appears to be tailored to the hotel’s main clientele group - Central and South Americans and if you’re looking for typical ‘British’ dishes, you’re not going to get them. We loved this about the hotel as we travel to experience difference, but appreciate others may have limited palettes! All alcoholic drinks we had felt watered down/lower quality, this didn’t bother us as we didn’t come here to drink.

Service: All of the hotel staff we interacted with were polite and professional and were always trying to help if they could.

Know what the hotel offers before you book it - this isn’t a big, all singing, all dancing, five star all inclusive with a beachfront location. If this is what you want, the Riu Palace, Playacar, or Yucatan is where you need to stay. If you want somewhere clean, safe, and cheap to sleep and eat then this hotel is for you.

Cracking value, a week well spent.

Managed to get a week's package holiday to the Lupita for £900. At that price it was cheaper than 4 nights half board in Spain, so was an easy choice to make. I had stayed at the Riu Tequila in May and that was a very impressive hotel. Arrived at the Lupita expecting the same standard, just on a smaller scale, and was not disappointed. The team at reception were excellent in checking us all in off the coach from the airport, and gave us a 5-10 minute welcome talk. Went straight to the room, which, whilst a bit dated, was clean, smart and more than adequate. The air conditioning wasn't overly powerful and the bed was comfortable. The only change I would like to see, as with the Tequila, is the option of thicker bedding. There is a fluffy blanket in the cupboard which did help, but personal preference for me is a relatively thick duvet and a cold room.

On arrival I found the selection of food to be a bit limited, however this is probably be down to the fact that I had been used to the Tequila having a dining room twice the size, and therefore twice the choice. But, as well as the buffet there is the option of the Italian and Mexican restaurants on site, and the steakhouse on the beach. As it happened, I only went to the buffet. I could still find more than enough to fill the plate, and it was top quality food from around the world.

The location of the hotel is excellent, it is nestled within the woods, and as such it is very peaceful. Being smaller, it is a lot calmer than the other Rius in Playacar, which to me is its selling point. If you like animals- you'll love the Lupita- Coatis everywhere, the occasional iguana and even resident cats (one is smart enough to camp outside the Italian restaurant every night without fail.)

The hotel's other major selling point is its shuttle bus. With the beach being the other side of the golf course, a shuttle bus is laid on. It runs every half hour (XX:00 and XX:30 from the hotel and XX:15 and XX:45 from the beach) and drops you off at the private Beach Club, next to the Riu Palace Riviera Maya. It's a lovely beach, with a snack bar by day and a steakhouse by night. However, it also stops at the gatehouse to Playa del Carmen itself. It turns a 2.5km walk to 5th Ave to a few hundred metres. Driver is excellent.

Service generally is cracking, personable staff who genuinely care. Had a call from reception around 10 minutes after checking in to make sure the room is okay, and then about 10 minutes before checkout to see if I needed help with my bag. Restaurant and bar staff are also great.

Not a fan of hotel entertainment so generally avoided it, but did sit and watch a drummer/ singer duo, who I did enjoy. The staff do wheel out a popcorn machine and some nuts for the evening entertainment which I think is a nice touch. On Fridays the Tequila run a party that all of the local Riu hotels can attend, the shuttle bus will take you over there from the Lupita.

All in all had a very enjoyable week away. I think my next trip to Playacar will be to the Lupita, as what it lacks in things like a huge variety of food, it more than makes up for with its peacefulness and access to Playa.

Loved it

Our first time in Mexico and Rui hotel. Loved the place as it was not too big and a great location, being on the edge of a golf course. The shuttle bus runs every half an hour to both the beach club and the main Playacar gates. So you can be in Playa del Carmen without having to walk too far. Drivers were happy, friendly and engaging.
The food in the main restaurant was varied and we always found food we enjoyed. You also have the choice of going to the snack bar ( Italian in the evening), the Mexican restaurant or booking the steak restaurant at the Beach club. We didn't bother with booking this as it had to be done at 7am on the day ) you wanted to eat there ( not ideal when you want to lie in on holiday.
The entertainment staff worked hard to provide day activities and evening entertainment which was on a 2 week rota. Loved the saxophone player and the silent disco.
The room was spacious and kept clean daily. The air-conditioning and full size fridge were noisy.
The main pool occasionally had aqua gym and water polo. If you wanted a peaceful sunbathe the quiet pool was lovely except there was only one lot of toilets and bar which I found unusual.
Loved seeing the coaties ( very cheeky particularly if you have food) and lizards regularly.
Enjoyed our 2 week stay.

Brilliant Two Weeks

This hotel is smaller compared to other RIU hotels I’ve stayed in, but with it being smaller it’s more homely and everyone knows each other, even with all nationalities staying at the hotel. The staff are amazing at this hotel, they can’t do enough for you, massive shout out to Simon the restaurant waiter, who looked after us brilliantly. The rooms are spacious, optics in the room and stocked fridge, use the RIU if you need to. Speciality restaurants only 3, Mexican, Italian and steak house which is at the beach and the shuttle bus will take you, once booked in. There is also a shuttle bus to take you to the beach throughout the day as you are not on the beach with this hotel and as previous people have stayed please read the description, it’s not the hotel fault if you don’t read, but throughly enjoyed our stay here and to top it off my son proposed to his girlfriend on the beach when we went to the steakhouse, would definitely go again to the RIU Lupita!

OK Resort

The resort itself is nice. The staff were very nice and accommodating. The rooms are average, the bed was hard and extremely uncomfortable. The restaurants were ok and have limited hours. The buffet had more of a cafeteria feel to it.
