Great Romantic Trip

We came to this resort thinking that we would have a nice beach vacation. What we found were friendly staff that made us feel like family, in a stunning location with amazing activities. Arturo, Carlos, and Juan made our day at Papito's every morning. Bryan convinced us to get a couples massage on the beach that was incomprehensibly relaxing, in theme with the resort itself. Thank you to el Dorado Maroma!

A beautiful experience, every time

AGAIN, a wonderful experience...Admittedly I am a returning guest, but I seldom take the time to leave a review. This beautiful resort is all about the staff! Can't thank them enough: Butlers, Alex, Enrique...so attentive and prompt. The spa experience, Bryan and his gentle soul, Flora, Blanca, their talented hands. Others who have taken such good care of me and my friends over the years, Eli, butler and Denys, concierge. I will continue to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and laugh and celebrate with the staff! I always look forward to my semi-annual stays to renew my spirit.

Amazing experience and staff

Carlos at Papitos is the best server! He was friendly, funny, and attentive. I always got the best iced coffee when he was our server and he remembered my coffee order. He made sure other servers knew about my coffee when he wasn't our server. Arturo at Papitos was also a great server.
Alejandro at Mio's swim up bar was a great bartender. He always remembered our drinks and was friendly and attentive and would say hi whenever he would see us around.
Jerik made bingo and pool volley ball fun with his friendly personality and jokes. He remembered our names and would say hi to us when he would see us around.

Heavenly

We have visited El Dorado Maroma several times and continue to remain in love with this place. Not only are the grounds, the food and the accommodations lovely, the staff is what sets this place above all. We have been going for the past 8 years and most of the staff are the same from our first visit. They remember you and welcome you back with open arms. If you are seeking a refuge from the hustle and bustle of reality and need a zen place to refresh and rejuvenate...this is your place. It is not a party place yet a relaxed peaceful place. This kind of atmosphere definitely feeds the soul and will keep us coming back again and again.

Relaxing, fun, and beautiful atmosphere at Maroma

Had an amazing week at El Dorado Maroma. The staff, the resort and the food were all amazing. We had a great time at the beautiful beach, and at the pool enjoying a lot of really beautiful days.

The staff is fantastic, from the housekeeping, the wait staff and all the bartenders but have to throw a shout out namely to the entertainment crew. Mauricio and Gerry made the week a blast and always kept things moving and fun. Keep up the amazing work guys!

Truthful, authentic and realistic review of this incredible hidden gem

My husband and I traveled to El Dorado Maroma from October 3rd to October 10th. We went to celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary. (Note: We haven't done an vacation together before this. He had never traveled to one prior to this and it had been 14 years since I had)
I did an immense amount of research before we chose El Dorado Maroma (and relied heavily on Trip Advisor reviews) and we were not at all disappointed by our choice.
I have to start by saying (and can not say it loud enough) THE STAFF ARE BEYOND AMAZING! The servers, bartenders, beach butlers, concierge, housekeeping - everyone that works there on the daily- They are the kindest, friendliest, funniest and truly just want to see you happy and always enjoying your time in paradise! And they work SO HARD every day, in the heat, in the rain and always so pleasant and with a smile.
Our experience wouldn't have been the same without them!
Huge shout out to Jesus (Mio & Lima Limon), Arturo at Papitos, Philipe at the pool bar and Karen at the Tiki Hut (beach bar) and our housekeeper Marisoliel. Thank you from the Canadians (Dos Equis and Rum n diet), you made our vacation so enjoyable and deserve recognition!
We booked a "private pool room" with a small pool on an upper balcony. On day one we were given a room on the pool side, 2nd floor. Unfortunately this room wasnt private and the carribean grill restaurant looked right into our room all evening. We took our grievance (and a large tip) to the lobby staff and they gave us a new room the following day. The new room was in the 300 block, on the top floor and faced the ocean. Very private and allowed for no one to see us on our balcony or in our private pool.
The resort is the perfect size for an intimate couple vacation. The crowd was mostly on the older side - if you're looking to party hard- this is not the spot. We were on the younger side of the guests that were there and we are 41&42. With that said, there were still things going on every day. Dancing, pool games, cooking lessons and crafty things.
The food was not your typical or expected all-inclusive food options.
There is no buffet. Everything is sit down with a menu and made to order. All the food was fresh, delicious and plentiful. We only had one meal that we weren't overly thrilled with at the Mediteranian Grill.
At breakfast they bring pastries, juice and coffee before you order. There is room service available 24/7.
The Taqueria is open for lunch every day- highly recommend!
We didnt have any interest on "top shelf" liquor but they do have it and serve it at your request.
The resort is on/next to a marina (shared space) and you have access to use of their jet skis, mini speed boats, paddle boards and kayaks. They also have their own catamarans and sport fishing boats you can arrange to use.
We didnt have any issue getting a Bali bed each morning at the butler hut. We would go around 9ish and they would make up a Bali bed and fill our cups. They always came by with little snacks and to refill our drinks. We did this most mornings.
The marina staff work tirelessly ALL DAY on keeping the seaweed off the beach. The ocean is very swimable and you can see the bottom so you can watch where you're stepping. The water was like bath water.
You can walk quite far down the beach if you want to go explore.
We enjoyed the pool in the afternoons. We could always get a lounger and sometimes a Bali bed. The pool was clean and there was always music playing. A great spot to congregate in the afternoon.
Note- watch out for the large iguanas if you have any food... they can get aggressive and will snatch your food.
Also you will see the casitas (essentially a racoon) and they can be naughty but they're so cute!
This resort has a section of overwater bungalows. They're pricy but they're beautiful inside. Not super private on the balconies as they're completely exposed. (In our opinion, not worth the 1700usd per person ,a night that they cost.)
There is a restaurant that is only available for guests that are in the bungalows called Palifitos.
We were aware that this chain of resorts has a marketing speal for a membership that they really want guests to attend and sit through and they offer perks like breakfast at Palifitos and a candlelight dinner on the beach (300USD value) IF you will go and attend this marketing presentation. (Think timeshare)
Silly us, even though we said we weren't going to get sucked in to this... we did. We attended the breakfast at Palifitos with their sales person- who was lovely- but she eats breakfast with you and we weren't expecting that. The food menu there was even higher end with items such as caviar and steak and they had delicious French press coffee. Then she toured us through an overwater bungalow and other villas and room options throughout the resort. Showing us all the "levels" of the membership and what they would get you. If it had have ended there, it wouldn't have been a total loss. But, we went back to the presentation center where she danced around what the actual cost of this membership was and then brought her manager JOSH over to put an immense amount of pressure on us and hammered us on purchasing this ridiculous membership. It was more than uncomfortable and he almost wouldn't allow us to leave. My husband had to get a little bit rude to get us out of there.
Please beware of this scheme that is mentioned at check in and then pushed on you by your concierge with little flyers dropped off at your room. As soon as you go to your concierge to book dinner reservations (which are unnecessary during non peak travel times) they start trying to offer you the perks that they will give you to sit through the marketing scheme.
Keep in mind this does not change our opinion on the resort itself- we knew better and got sucked in and we are providing a warning for others!
The other warning we would like to provide to future travellers is surrounding excursions. We booked an excursion through Lomas Travel, who has a little office building on site at the resort. We wanted to swim/snorkle with the sea turtles. But we didn't want a full day trip and we explained that. They quickly booked us a trip through an outside company that I believe was called COBA. The excursion was called Turtle Express. The flyer they gave us advertising the excursion had us under the impression we were going to the turtles and then having lunch and returning. Also, the Lomas rep didn't really give us much for details, just told us to be in the lobby at 7:50am the day we were booked to go. We, along with another couple, were picked up and told we were being taken to a meeting point. The other couple were going on a different excursion so they would stay in the original vehicle and we got into a different vehicle at the meeting point. This vehicle already had 4 other people in it. Also, we were told we had to pay a travel tax of 20USD per person before we could continue our journey - we were aware that we would have to pay this and the new driver requested this before we entered the vehicle. We asked how long it would take to get to our destination and were told that Akumel (where the turtles were) was about an hour away. What we weren't told is that we would be driving to another resort to pick up 4 more people and that would add a total of 3 hours onto the driving for the day. The entire turtle experience was unorganized, there was very little direction or detail from the excursion personnel through the entire excursion. Once the snorkeling was over (all of 45 mins I believe) we stood around and waited for our COBA rep to come and lead us back to the van. This is where we thought we would be taken someplace to eat and at this point we were starving. Instead we were taken to a local "Mayan Village" to see a shaman and recieve a prayer. Of course this was just a gift shop for the people there to pressure us all to buy their wares. Which we would have except the prices were atrocious with no bartering. When we all started pushing to leave, the rep from the excursion company cornered one of the ladies from the original group in the van and told her she needed to pay another 20USD for travel or he wouldn't let her leave. She paid it - likely out of panic. The rest of us were pretty vocal about the fact that we had already paid and wouldn't be paying again. Finally we left there- still no lunch, not even a snack and made the long trek back to drop off the last group and then to our resort. Not a great experience at all and we paid $198USD for this.
So buyer beware on excursions! Ask all the questions. Take snacks and drinks in your bag! Make sure you know the agenda for the entire outing. We approached Lomas after the fact and were told it should have been straight to the turtles from the meeting spot(no extra pick up) and straight back - no Mayan village gift shop.
Again, regardless of this situation, it does not change our opinion on the resort and we will be back one day soon!! We can not wait to return to this little piece of paradise!!!

Hidden details and prices

Staff very welcome and we're well trained in their roles.
It was our honeymoon and we're upgraded.We got all unpacked and the next day the ceiling had leaked. Reported this only to be told to repack and go back to see if they had another room. Eventuality found a room next door which was disappointing and dated.
When you have a meal and you ask for wine please do not get taken in by the nice waiters recommending wines. No wine menu was given with the prices and when we came to pay our bill at the end of our holiday 2 bottles of wine came to about 200 quid. They also try to sell you an experience of dining which we went for but could not make it because our day trip did not get back till late which we didn't realize. We had to get the cpt of the boat to cancel our booking once we realized which proved difficult.They wanted to charge us 50% for but I refused as it was not done deliberately. Ask for prices and receipts. Need transparency as I would never buy wine that price

Intimate, quiet and nearly perfect

We stayed recently at this great hotel, it’s a lot smaller than a lot of the family orientated Mexico hotels, lets get my only negative out of the way first, we stayed in 412 and believe that some of the rooms may need a renovation (Our outside shower didn’t work, and the room decor was definitely aging, to be fair we didn’t complain either, in fairness tot the hotel I know at least 1 couple that did and they were immediately moved)

The rest of the hotel is amazing, it feels very intimate once you have arrived, from the welcome drink on arrival, through to the refreshing towel while you are sadly waiting for the return transfer. The food is great, not a single sign of a buffet which we liked, you have the choice of a number of à la carte restaurants each day. The beach is perfect, miles of beautiful clean (rake and ploughed every morning) sand. We also did the 80 mins couples massage on the first and that set the relaxing tone for us.

Special thank you to Manuel on the beach, thank you so much for looking after us and making our trip truly special, at times it felt like we were the only people there. And to the team at the over water restaurant for making my Wife’s birthday meal what it was, definitely worth booking if you get chance. Nearly forgot, the band (I’ve forgotten their name sorry) they played lots of Pink Floyd etc, absolutely brilliant, best hotel entertainment ever!

Overall we loved it 4.9999999999999 out of 5 (we booked through TUI)
